Should Smoking be banned in ALL public places?

1 in 5 people over the age of 18 smoke in the United States. From 2004 to 2015 the number of people who smoked in the US dropped from 36.4 million to 30.7 million people. Estimates in 2020 are down to 20.5 million people smoke each day. These are all facts and statistics from the CDC.

Smoking has always been a controversial topic in America. The age was just raised to buy all tobacco products from 18 to 21. The Journal of the American College of Cardiology states that original smoking bans in restaurants and airports have diminished the number of heart attacks in people ages 45-69 by 26 percent. “Even breathing in low doses of cigarette smoke can increase one’s risk of heart attack,” said David Meyers, M.D., M.P.H., professor of Cardiology & Preventive Medicine, University of Kansas School of Medicine and lead investigator of the study.

The Center for Disease Control Center specifically states that, Exposure to secondhand smoke from burning tobacco products causes disease and premature death among nonsmokers. There is also no possible alternative to not receiving secondhand smoke. A spokesperson said that even one cigarette can do so much harm when it comes to secondhand smoke.

Smoking bans in public areas help so many different causes, whether if it is reducing asthma attacks on children or helping reduce the heart attack rate in adults.

There are really any reasonable explanations to why smoking should not be banned in public areas, while smoking causes so many different types of diseases it should be a reasonable doubt that people should not be smoking in restaurants, airports, hotels, or sports arenas. Smoking is banned in 29 of the 31 NFL stadiums, as well with 28 out of the 30 MLB stadiums. Smoking has always been a topic that is “taboo” to talk about. It is not something people are proud of being that 7 in 10 people want to quit and that 6 out of 10 people are trying to actively quit. This isn’t a you should quit smoking paper, it’s a fact and statistic paper.
